Sustainability and Poultry: A Cornerstone of Our Farm

At The Red Thread Spice Company, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a way of life. From the way we grow our spices to the practices we implement on our farm; we are committed to a holistic approach that honors the environment and promotes long-term health. One of the most integral parts of our sustainable farm practices is our poultry flock, which plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and supporting the productivity of our farm.

The Role of Poultry in Sustainability

1. Soil Enrichment

Poultry naturally help improve the soil on our farm. Through their busy scratching and foraging, they disturb the soil, helping to aerate it. This process breaks down organic matter, such as plant material and compost, into nutrient-rich soil. The manure they produce is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—three vital nutrients that plants need to thrive. When we use chicken manure responsibly as fertilizer, it supports healthy soil and contributes to the growth of our crops. This creates a closed-loop system where waste is transformed into a valuable resource, minimizing the need for synthetic fertilizers.

2. Pest Control

Chickens, ducks and geese are excellent natural pest controllers. They eagerly hunt down insects, and even small rodents. This helps reduce the need for chemical pesticides, which can have negative effects on both the environment and the food we grow. By allowing our poultry to roam freely with supervision in areas that require pest management, we reduce our reliance on external inputs, keeping our farm healthy and ecologically balanced.

3. Waste Reduction

Another key aspect of sustainability on our farm is waste reduction. The birds help us divert fresh food scraps and organic matter from the landfill by consuming leftovers and even non-edible farm waste like weeds. In this way, they become an important part of our farm’s waste management system, turning discarded food into eggs, and nutrient-rich manure. This reduces the overall carbon footprint of our farm and keeps our waste stream minimal.

The Importance of Poultry Flock Health

While poultry are incredibly beneficial to our farm’s ecosystem, their health is of utmost importance. A thriving flock is essential to ensuring that we can continue reaping these environmental and production benefits. Healthy, happy birds are not only more productive, but they are also better at fulfilling their roles in soil enrichment, pest control, and waste reduction.

Best Practices and Science Based Husbandry Practices on Our Farm

To maintain the health of our poultry and the success of our sustainable practices, we adhere to a set of best practices that prioritize the well-being of our flock.

  1. Access to Clean Water and Nutritious Feed

We ensure our birds have access to fresh, clean water at all times and provide them with a balanced diet that includes grains, vegetables, and protein. This helps them stay healthy and strong, contributing to their productivity and overall well-being. We focus on a natural, balanced diet to support their immune systems.

  1. Ample Space and Clean Housing

Providing enough space for our poultry to roam freely is essential for their health and happiness. Our chickens have access to large, open spaces where they can forage, scratch, and interact with one another. We also maintain clean, well-ventilated housing to protect them from disease and predators. Cleanliness in the coop is critical to preventing the spread of illness, and we regularly sanitize their living spaces to ensure a healthy environment.

  1. Regular Monitoring and Veterinary Care

Our poultry are monitored daily for any signs of illness or distress. If any issues arise, we work with experienced veterinarians to address them promptly. Preventative measures, such as ensuring optimal nutrition, and a stress-free environment, are part of our regular care routine to keep our flock healthy year-round. We take pride in caring for our pampered flock.

  1. Encouraging Natural Behavior

Poultry are intelligent, social animals, and providing them with opportunities to engage in natural behaviors and enrichment activities—such as dust bathing, foraging, and roosting—is essential for their mental and physical well-being. This not only helps them stay healthy, but also ensures they’re content and stress-free, which in turn leads to higher egg production and better overall health.

Natural Laying Cycle: No Artificial Light

At The Red Thread Spice Company, we are dedicated to respecting the natural cycles of our poultry, and that includes the laying cycle. Unlike many commercial operations that use artificial lighting to encourage year-round egg production, we allow our hens to follow their natural rhythms.

During the fall and winter months, when daylight hours are shorter, our hens naturally reduce egg production. By not interfering with their natural cycle through artificial lighting, we ensure that our birds can rest, recover, and maintain their health. We believe that this approach supports a more balanced, stress-free life for our flock, which in turn leads to better egg quality and more resilient chickens. It’s also one of the key aspects of our commitment to sustainability—by working with nature instead of against it, we maintain a healthier environment both for our flock and the crops we grow.

This approach helps ensure that our poultry experience a more natural and fulfilling life, while also reducing our farm’s energy usage and carbon footprint. No artificial lights mean fewer resources are needed, and our hens are healthier and more productive in the long term. So, there may be times when we are out of stock and hope you understand that the ladies are on a well-deserved and unscheduled production vacation. They’re not required to give us notice 😉

Safety Tip: Avoiding Heat Lamps

A common mistake many poultry farmers make is using heat lamps in coops, especially during colder months. However, heat lamps can be dangerous, both for the poultry and the farm itself. They can cause fires if not properly maintained, and the artificial warmth they provide may lead to overheating or cause a flock unnecessary stress.

At The Red Thread Spice Company, we prioritize the well-being of our birds by not relying on heat lamps. Instead, we provide our poultry with proper shelter and allow them to acclimate to seasonal changes. We use well-insulated housing to maintain warmth and reduce drafts. If extra warmth is needed, we opt for safer alternatives, such as ceramic heat emitters, which are designed to be safer than heat lamps and don’t emit light.

Allowing our chickens to experience a natural temperature cycle helps them stay hardy and resilient. It’s also better for their immune system, as they are less likely to become dependent on artificial heat sources. Additionally, not using heat lamps reduces the risk of fire hazards and ensures a more energy-efficient farming operation.

Sustainability Beyond the Flock

While our poultry are an essential part of our sustainability practices, their contributions are just one piece of the puzzle. At The Red Thread Spice Company, we take a holistic approach to farming, integrating sustainable methods across the board. From crop rotation to water conservation and energy-efficient practices, we continually strive to reduce our environmental impact and foster a balanced, regenerative farm ecosystem.

By maintaining a healthy, well-cared-for poultry flock and allowing them to follow their natural laying cycle, we can support our farm’s health and sustainability. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful husbandry and responsible farming practices can create a positive impact not only on the environment but also on the communities we serve. Our commitment to sustainable farming is at the core of everything we do, and we are proud to share it with you through the products we grow and harvest.

Join us on our journey to a more sustainable future—one chicken, duck and goose at a time!
